Edgar wants to be president of the United States. Yano wants to be a "zillionaire CEO." These fifth-grade students have a long way to go, but they're working on their goals with the help of their teachers.
"My mother pounded it into me," Santos remembers. "She would always tell me, 'You have to go to college. It isn't an option. I don't want you to end up on the streets like your father.'"
The goal of a bilingual education program is to have well-rounded students that are not only bilingual, but also biliterate and bicultural. The program's main purpose is to prepare non-native students for the transition to American culture.
